Correctional Notice: In January 2005 we reported the story of Fr. Wojtyla (JPII)'s refusal to baptize a Jewish orphan in the 1940's. We unintentionally misrepresented the couple bringing the child as being "adoptive parents" -- they were not but wanted to become such. Given the very little information available about the details of the circumstances surrounding this case, it is difficult to ascertain whether the Church would agree or disagree with a refusal of baptism, as the parents' wish had been that the boy be transferred to his own kin, the couple were not the legal parents of the boy, and the Church, of course, teaches that there is to be no baptism of children who will not be raised in the Catholic Faith. Given the uncertainty of the facts, we have removed the story and retract it and apologize for any misinformation.
